A Fall Engagement Session at Lake Minnewanka
There’s something just so magical about fall in Banff—the crisp air, golden leaves, and the way the mountains seem to glow in autumn light. When Antonette and Jim chose Lake Minnewanka for their fall engagement session, they couldn’t have picked a better spot to celebrate their love. Nestled in the heart of Banff National Park, the lake offered the perfect blend of dramatic mountain backdrops and soft autumn tones. Their Lake Minnewanka fall engagement photo session was full of laughter, cozy moments, and the kind of romance that only fall in the Rockies can bring.
Why Lake Minnewanka is Magical in Autumn
In Banff, the autumn season is a sight to behold. The larch and aspen trees begin their slow burn to hues of gold and umber, the lighting is soft yet warm from the harvest sun, and the lakeshore is quiet, making Lake Minnewanka the ideal setting for an engagement session.
There are plenty of spots to propose in the Rockies, but Lake Minnewanka is one of my favourites! The views from the lakeshore showcase the best of Banff’s mountain ranges framed in the golden fall foliage, creating picture-perfect moments to capture romance and love in the Rockies. With ample parking, rest and picnic areas, cook houses, and plenty of trails for exploring, Lake Minnewanka offers enough amenities to really make a date of your session, meaning the fun doesn’t end once the shoot does. Cuddling up in a cookhouse and stoking the fire while taking in great views and nibbling on a picnic is the best way to cap off a fun day adventuring in the Rockies.
Antonette & Jim’s Cozy Fall Engagement Story
We began our Lake Minnewanka fall engagement photoshoot by meeting at the Lake Minnewanka boat cruise launch docks. Due to the quiet nature of the season, our time near the boats was undisturbed as we got to know one another more, allowing the couple to loosen up and get into the feel for the engagement photography session. As we moved along the dock to the shoreline, they really started to become playful with one another, flirting and letting their love shine through. They told me that their faith is something that is very important in their relationship, and we talked about all the ways faith has come up in their past. They also shared their plans for their imminent micro-wedding among friends and family and how it would be inclusive of their faith. Their love story is one that is truly special, and I am so thankful they took the time to tell me the story of how they came to be a couple. Throughout the engagement session at Lake Minnewanka, I allowed Antoinette and Jim to be their true selves, exploring, flirting, and being playful with one another, as well as posing them in ways I saw they naturally gravitated toward.

Fall Colors, Crisp Air, and Mountain Views
Of course, autumn in Banff can bring any weather, but on this day we were lucky to experience sunshine and good vibes for Antoinette and Jim’s engagement session. In the past, I have seen the snow fly as early as October 4th, but for this session we were lucky to enjoy sunshine, epic mountain views, soft daylight, and amazing golden hues. All in all, it ended up being the perfect day for an engagement session at Lake Minnewanka.
What to Wear for Fall Engagement Photos in Banff
Of course, I always steer my couples toward neutral or earth-tone-coloured clothing for engagement sessions. In the fall, it is especially important to bring layers and dress in clothing with a variety of textures. The number one thing I always remind my couples of when choosing their ‘fit is to gravitate towards their favourite outfit; something they have worn before to a dressier outing. It is important that you are comfortable and confident in whatever outfit you choose for your engagement photography session, so you are able to be present and in the moment with your loved one, instead of being itchy in a new jumper you haven’t worn before!
You can also bring a change of outfit if you’d like! Start the session in something a little more fancy, such as a dress, and change into a more casual outfit, such as pants and a sweater, toward the end. You’ll naturally be more cold, so changing into a cozy outfit will help you be comfortable and happy during your engagement shoot.
